Water hyacinth is in Asia because of its beautiful purple flowers. It was brought to European water gardens during the British Empire but was not adequately contained within those walls. It was introduced without an inkling of the ecosystem collapse it would cause and is an example of human action eclipsing understanding. Its imperial roots in Asia also stand as a physical reminder of the extraction of that system, and lingering colonial impacts. Binding a rock is a meditative process, pulling against that which is unmovable. Fibers tension, pull, rub, and start to break. I weave to cover the rock. The flat color of the fabric contradicts the depth of colors of the lichen that make their home on that surface. The most inane natural object contains a vibrant rage of life, and in defiance of that, I have placed a label. I qualify the rock, according to the logic of arbitrary names and real economics. Anti-sacrilege laws, enforced in France, required the death of anyone found guilty of sacrilege. This legislature ultimately led to the July Revolution, which ousted King Charles X. This quilt is based on "The Butcher," an Honoré Daumier print created after the revolution.
